Annual Conference of the Faculty of Surgical Trainers
Surgical Training: In Time and On Time
This years’ annual FST Conference took place on 25 October 2019 at the Studio in Birmingham. The conference had great success with over 60 delegates and speakers including BAUS St Peter’s Medal winners Professor Roger Kirby and Mr Ian Eardley. Keynote speakers took the form of Ms Aimee Charnell and Ms Alex Cope, who started the conversation with ‘Run Through Training – Yay or Nay?’. The main focus of the conference was to learn from the trial of improving surgical training programs by challenging delegates to consider the Professionalisation of the Surgical Trainer. In doing so, the Faculty of Surgical Trainers is raising awareness and inviting all stakeholders to the table to create a sustainable learning culture for the future.
Of the event, Faculty Director David O'Regan said "It was clear that we can design innovative training programs and we can train effectively in time, but this depends on a good trainer – we understand the attributes and behaviours of a good trainer but we now need to support and develop their skills. This will require TIME and SPACE."
Only time will tell how successful we have been in our endeavour. Join us next year for the FST annual conference on 16 October 2020 titled ‘Communication, Communication, Communication’ to learn more.
FST Medal 2019
Congratulations also go out to Rachel Hargest, this year’s winner of the FST Medal 2019. Rachel is an academic colorectal surgeon at Cardiff University and the University Hospital of Wales. In 2017 she won the Silver Scalpel Award for the best surgical trainer in the United Kingdom, awarded by the Association of Surgeons in Training.
