RCSEd Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry

The Diploma in Paediatric Dentistry for Dental Therapists and graduates in Oral Health Sciences commenced in the RCSEd in 2017. This innovative and exciting programme is the first of its kind to be offered by a Royal College in the UK, and is an online educational course extending over a period of one year. This unique course is intended to give those individuals with an interest in paediatric dentistry enhanced knowledge and skills.

The qualification from the RCSEd is recognition of advanced standing and will provide a framework for future progression and career development. The first cohort of students completed their studies in December 2018 and the second course commenced in January of this year.

Students are invited to attend a residential weekend in the College prior to sitting the final examination, which comprises a three-hour written paper and discussion of four simulated clinical cases. On successful completion of the course, students are entitled to use the post-nominals of Dip Paed Dent (DT) RCSEd.

Feedback from the course has been very positive:

“I found the course has helped to boost my confidence in this area by reinforcing my skills in treatment planning. As I worked through the modules I was inspired to do further reading which has led to positive changes to the way I manage certain patients and to strengthening areas that I was less familiar with such as orthodontics and oral surgery.  The residential weekend was particularly useful and I enjoyed meeting the rest of the cohort of like-minded Dental Therapists from across the UK, and happy to say that we keep in touch and they have been a good source of professional support.” – Shelley Cook, Dip Paed Dent Student 2018

The course is open to registered dental therapists/hygienists with a recommendation of two years post registration clinical experience. The next intake for this programme will start in January 2020 and applications close on Friday 13 September 2019.
