New Dental Symposium coming to the College in March

The College is delighted to announce its first Symposium on Dental Care for People with Cancer, which will take place on 20 March at Symposium Hall, The Royal College of Surgeons, Edinburgh.
The event provides an opportunity to learn about patient pathways in cancer treatments, the use of anti-resorptive drugs (including bisphosphonates) and the issues faced when assessing and treating patients before and during cancer treatment. Speakers include Mr Vinod Patel, Consultant Oral Surgeon, Dr. Huw Roddie, Consultant Haematologist and Dr. Caroline Michie, Consultant Medical Oncologist.
We caught up with the symposium convenor, Mr Jonathan Kallow, and learned more about the benefits of attending this event.
1. What motivated you to organise the Dental Care for People with Cancer Symposium as a new RCSEd event?
I have been seeing an increasing number of patients for dental assessment before treatment for cancer, particularly when that treatment involves bisphosphonates or anti-angiogenic medication. I’ve never been at an educational event where this has been discussed in detail and speaking with colleagues I was aware that this subject would be of interest to a wide audience. I’m really looking forward to it; it looks like it is going to be an interesting, thought provoking day.
2. Who is the event aimed at?
The event is aimed at anyone in the dental team who is involved in providing dental care for people with cancer. It will be particularly relevant to Special Care Dentists and Oral Surgeons of any grade working in Hospital or Community settings but really anyone who provides dental care for people with cancer. I know there’s been an interest from Oral Medicine and Restorative colleagues too.
3. What is the event format and what topics will be covered?
There will be lectures given by experts in the field – both medical and dental - and there will also be the opportunity to ask questions and discuss what is covered. Some of the topics we will hear about include Anti-resorptive drugs, MRONJ, Haematological Malignancy and Stem Cell Transplant. To get us thinking, we also have three Special Care Dentists lined up to present some interesting cases they have been involved with assessing and treating.
4. What are the key benefits of attending this event?
We are often familiar with the dental implications of some of the drugs given in cancer treatment. A key benefit of the event will be to see how these medications fit into the wider medical treatment for the patient and to think about how this impacts the dental care we provide.
After attending the symposium we will be better prepared to assess and plan dental treatment for people with cancer which is so important.
