College Set to Award Medals in Recognition of Outstanding Services in Surgery

Mr Charlie Auld and Professor Eric Borgstein will be among those honoured at prestigious RCSEd Diploma Ceremony.
Mr Charlie Auld – College Medal
Recognition of Outstanding Service to the College and immense amount of work done in developing the Faculty of Perioperative Care (FPC).
The Faculty of Perioperative Care launched in March 2016 to provide education, training and support for advanced perioperative practitioners in their role as members of the extended surgical team.
Surgical Care Practitioners (SCPs) and Surgical First Assistants (SFAs) are an integral part of the modern surgical workforce and FPC exists to offer support and career development opportunities for practitioners in this field, with regards to education, training and the setting of RCSEd-accredited standards.
As Faculty of Perioperative Care Lead, Mr Auld was instrumental in building relationships and partnerships with The Association for Perioperative Practice (AfPP) and the Faculty of Physician Associates, and takes a hands-on approach in visiting and lecturing at universities who run courses leading to modules and degrees for students / trainee SCPs and SFAs.
On listening to ongoing concerns relating to the provision of CPD, and the lack of a database or register of practitioners, such as SCPs, and hearing of the need for clarity of the exact role of SFAs, Mr Auld is prioritising this as an action for the Faculty to address.
The Faculty has gone from strength to strength, seeing a growth in both membership and fellowship. There has been significant development of the bespoke educational courses and successful delivery of the Faculty’s annual conferences.
The Faculty is set for even more growth with the aim to expand partnerships with universities, and exploring an international arm of the Faculty in countries where advanced practitioners are employed. Mr Auld looks forward to delivering this success, and are excited to welcome more members to the Faculty.
Professor Eric Borgstein – College International Medal 2017
Recognition for services to surgery in Malawi.
As Professor of Paediatric Surgery at the College of Medicine of the University of Malawi, Professor Borgstein was instrumental in the development of the postgraduate specialty training programs at the College of Medicine of the University of Malawi during his tenure as Postgraduate Dean. He has a long involvement with the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) where he is currently the Secretary General and previously Chair of the Examinations Committee.
Professor Borgstein has hosted several Rahima Dawood Fellows (a fellowship enabling a College Fellow to teach and lecture in a member country of the Association of Surgeons of East Africa) over the years. He maintains a keen interest in surgical education and has been a strong collaborator with Professor Garden in delivering The Edinburgh Surgical Sciences Qualification (ESSQ) to his country.
