Given that some 40% of RCSEd’s membership is based in England, and the seriousness with which we take workforce matters, RCSEd has submitted the following response to HEE’s workforce strategy consultation. The final strategy, which will due to be published in July 2018 to coincide with the NHS’s 70th anniversary, aims to future-proof the NHS and care workforce.

RCSEd’s response covers a variety of issues including overseas recruitment, the impact of training and education on bullying and undermining, and the need for flexible career pathways in surgery. We are calling on the government to ensure there is a single, robust source of data on the healthcare workforce in England to support detailed planning, to ensure that the NHS continues to be open and attractive to overseas staff and to commit to national leadership on public health initiatives. We are also calling for additional consultation after the first draft of HEE’s report has been published.
