The dental clinical skills competition to discover the UK's best undergraduate dentist reaches its climax at the Grand Final in Edinburgh on Thursday 8 March 2018.

The RCSEd Dentsply Sirona Dental Skills Competition is now in its fourth year, and has seen over 300 final year dental students from across the UK and Ireland demonstrate their skills in a series of challenges.

The competition began with 18 regional rounds, one at each UK dental school, during which the students are asked to undertake complex dental work on a simulated patient, which was then anonymously submitted to the assessors who announced the winner 60 minutes later.

In the Grand Final, the 18 finalists will undertake a broad range of clinical procedures before determining who will be crowned the overall trainee dentist winner at the competition’s Grand Final Dinner.

The winner will be awarded an all expenses paid four day trip to Dentsply Sirona’s Restorative Forum in Konstanz, Germany.

Mr Brian Nattress, member of RCSEd's Dental Council and a Consultant Dentist in Leeds, said: "This year’s dental skills contest was expanded to include more dental schools from the UK and Ireland. The added competition captured every students' enthusiasm and drive by placing them in a competitive situation against more of the best final year students. The final promises to be an extremely competitive and tense affair when once again, they will be challenged on a range of key clinical skills."

Gerry Campbell, VP & General Manager UK, Dentsply Sirona said: "Following last year’s successful Dental Skills Competition, we are once again honoured and delighted to continue our partnership with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh to celebrate the talented dental clinicians of tomorrow.

This competition continues to bring the best out of students and this year we will be adding key elements of the latest techniques in digital dentistry to the competition. Through our continued commitment to providing innovative solutions for better, faster, safer dentistry and our expansive education programme, it is our desire and privilege to support dental professionals throughout their career.”
