Alex Young, a trauma and orthopaedic surgeon by training, has won the 2018 Surgical Innovation Competition with his submission entitled Virti: Immersive Technology to Assess Decision-Making Under Pressure and Distribute Provider Content. The award was presented to Mr Young at the 2018 Triennial Conference in Edinburgh Thursday 22 March by RCSEd Council Member Mr Roger Currie.
Virti is a remote, enterprise learning solution that uses interactive VR, AR and MR (virtual reality, augmented reality and mixed reality) video to provide educational content and analytics that intelligently predicts how a user will perform under pressure before entering a real environment.
The Surgical Innovation Competition gave trainees from ST3 to ST8 the opportunity to put forward their ideas for innovations in surgery, surgical education, training and technology within the NHS.
