Responding to news that medical students have been offered the chance to volunteer to help relieve winter pressures on A&E, Professor Michael Lavelle-Jones, President of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh said:

“The NHS is currently facing intense pressure and it would be extremely worrying if medical students are being asked to undertake routine clinical duties to essentially cover staffing gaps.

“Medical students are not qualified doctors and must be supervised at all times. Students have a duty to recognise and work within the limits of their competence, as outlined in the GMC Duties of a Doctor.

“Proper supervision is essential to ensure high levels of patient safety are upheld and that students are receiving high quality training.”
