Today RCSEd President Professor Michael Lavelle-Jones wrote to UK MPs to show the College’s support of their call for a cross party convention on the NHS.

Professor Lavelle-Jones said:

‘I am writing as President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh to thank you for contacting the Prime Minister and Chancellor to call for a cross party and long-term approach to NHS and social care.

We represent over 15,000 surgeons and dentists throughout the UK, and given the many and growing pressures being placed upon the NHS, we wholeheartedly endorse your calls for a NHS and Care Convention. As you have stated, both patients and NHS staff have real anxieties about the future sustainability of services and whilst the NHS remains an exemplar of patient care and safety, an honest conversation needs to take place to ensure that the system is able to deliver the best possible services now and in the future.

Whilst we share your disappointment that your approach has been declined, we believe that this is the only practicable solution to the current crisis.

Do not hesitate to contact me should our College be able to offer any further assistance with this matter.’
