Following the publication of the Home Affairs Committee report “Home office delivery of Brexit: immigration”, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Professor Michael Lavelle-Jones said:
“The NHS workforce relies heavily on staff from across the EU. It is essential that processes are put in place which ensure the NHS can recruit highly valued, skilled professionals from across the EU.
We echo the concerns of the report regarding the delay of the White Paper expected in autumn 2017 and call for the Government to confirm its plans for EU citizens already living in the UK and those who move to the UK during the transition period and after Brexit.
We also strongly support the recommendation for a review of the Tier 2 system which currently leads to highly skilled individuals appointed to NHS posts being refused visas, despite staff shortages”
