College Appoints New Conveners of Education and Examinations

The College is pleased to announce two new appointments, with Mr Chelliah Selvasekar recently appointed as RCSEd Convener of Education and Mr Ian Hawthorn appointed RCSEd Convener of Examinations. 

Mr Selvasekar and Mr Hawthorn will serve three years in these roles.


Mr Chelliah Selvasekar is Consultant Colorectal, Laparoscopic and Robotic Surgeon at the Christie NHS Foundation Trust in Manchester. He is also a Supervisor, Examiner and a Convener for the intercollegiate MRCS examinations. He has worked with the College for many years, having been Course Convener for the College’s ‘Future Surgeons: Key Skills Course’ at the Christie, and he helped to design and successfully conduct the ‘FRCS Exit Exam Course in General Surgery’. At the Christie, they also conduct Basic Surgical Skills Course four times a year.







Mr Ian Hawthorn is Consultant General and Vascular Surgeon at the University Hospital of North Durham (UHND). He started examining with the RCSEd Exam Team, in the MRCS examination, 13 years ago, and gradually become one of the Senior Examiners, supervising the MRCS examinations both in the UK and internationally. He is also Examiner in the FRCS Examination and in the Hong Kong and Singapore JSF Tri-collegiate Exit Examination in General Surgery.  He has represented the College as an External Examiner in Bangladesh, and is part of the faculty on a number of MRCS and FRCS international preparation courses.
