Commenting on Health Education England’s NHS Workforce Strategy, RCSEd President, Professor Michael Lavelle-Jones said:
“The College is very pleased to see the publication of this important document and consultation, and welcomes it as a significant step in the drive to improve the working lives of everyone working in NHS England, for the ultimate benefit of both professionals and patients.
“Seventy percent of the College’s UK membership is based in England, so we are looking forward to working with HEE, NHS England, other Colleges and all those involved, to develop and deliver the strategy going forward. We will also respond formally to the consultation and engage with our membership throughout England in this process. We would also urge our membership to respond to the consultation themselves.
“However, as a College with significant membership in all four UK home nations, we recognise that this must be tackled on a pan-UK basis, as the issues raised in this document around recruitment, retention, culture and working environment are also evident in Wales, Northern Ireland and Scotland. Many of the elements that relate to surgical services in particular were highlighted in our recent report, Improving the Working Environment for Safe Surgical Care and we would urge all four nations to work together, sharing ideas and best practice.”
