Speaking about last night's announcement from the BMA regarding the cessation of the planned strike action, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, Michael Lavelle-Jones, said:
"We warmly welcome this announcement which serves to confirm the professionalism and dedication of Junior Doctors, who continue to put the safety and care of their patients first, whilst still facing the imposition of the new Junior Doctors’ contract.
"We now ask the government to follow the lead of the BMA and Junior Doctors by calling off the imposition of the contract and resuming negotiations. Imposition of any contract is an action that cannot be countenanced and we urge all those involved to focus on achieving a successful outcome to the dispute which is in the best interests of the Junior Doctors, our patients and our National Health Service.
"As a College we offer our support to all parties in helping them reach a positive conclusion to an issue which continues to cause so much concern and anxiety to so many."
In August 2016 the President wrote to the Secretary of State for Health asking him to consider a number of practical steps to help improve surgical training and staff morale.
