Welcoming the launch of the independent report into the shape of health and social care in Northern Ireland (Health and Wellbeing 2016: Delivering Together), Michael Lavelle Jones, President of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh said:

“Professor Bengoa’s report is challenging, describing a health and social care system as being at “breaking point” with an over reliance on hospitals, long waiting lists and problems recruiting and retaining medical professionals.

“Whilst the report does not predict hospital closures, there is likely to be a reconfiguration of services and steps taken to provide more care away from hospital settings.

“As the Health Minister has said, change will not be simple and improvements not happen overnight. However, we look forward to working with the Health and Social Care Board and Trusts to improve patient care and outcomes across Northern Ireland.”
