Speaking about the Secretary of State for Health’s announcement today that the Government will introduce a plan to train an extra 1,500 doctors a year, Mr Michael Lavelle-Jones, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh said:

"We welcome the initiative  to expand the number of medical school places in England.

"However, this plan must serve to provide the much needed additional capacity required in the National Health Service rather than replacement of our existing international workforce.

"While this measure alone will not address the fundamental issues of attracting and retaining staff in the NHS, nor the problem of low morale which exists across the workforce, we hope that it is the first step in tackling these issues."
