The Faculty of Dental Surgery of the RCSEd has given its backing to a report proposing a national standard for the use of conscious sedation in the delivery of dental care.

The standards apply to all who practise conscious sedation techniques, whether they are dentists, doctors, nurses or dental care professionals, and describe available clinical techniques and appropriate environments for delivery. Conscious sedation is used in the treatment of dental patients who have significant anxiety.

The report calls for a system for reporting adverse events in the delivery of conscious sedation for independent dental practices and for inspections to be carried out to determine that the correct standards are in place.

The report also makes recommendations on ensuring optimum standards for patient information and education and training of the entire dental team.
