The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has given its backing to a campaign to promote the work and commitment of support staff within the NHS. ‘One Team For Our NHS’, launched by public service union UNISON, is delivering the message that all staff no matter what their role play an important part in delivering quality patient care. The campaign is also challenging what it calls the artificial divide created by terms such as ‘frontline’ and ‘back office’ staff.
Writing to MPs who have supported the campaign, the College’s President Mr Ian Ritchie said “The RCSEd has long recognised the important role that the wider medical team plays in ensuring that patients receive the highest level of care. For our part, we are working increasingly closely with the wider surgical team to ensure they have access to the necessary support and training. We see this campaign as a welcome extension of this approach to all staff working for the NHS and would welcome the chance to support it in any way possible.”
The move comes following a joint conference between the RCSEd and Association for Perioperative Practice, held on 17 October in Birmingham, where the challenges and needs of surgical care practitioners and surgical first assistants was discussed by representatives of both organisations. The College is also in the process of developing a Faculty of Perioperative Care, which will provide a tailored suite of courses for perioperative practitioners and allow them to affiliate with the RCSEd.
