The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) is pleased to invite Medical Students, Doctors and Trainees to submit entries for its Communications Skills Video Competition 2015/2016!

Communications skills are vital for all medical professionals and form a key element of the MRCS OSCE examination. This competition invites all UK and international Medical Students, Doctors and Trainees to get creative and demonstrate their understanding of good communication skills by creating a video which highlights one of the three elements examined in the MRCS OSCE.

Entrants are invited to prepare and record a three minute video of a scenario showcasing good communications practice in one of the three communication skills elements:

  • Talking with relatives and carers
  • Communicating with colleagues
  • History taking

Consultant Plastic Surgeon Dr Judy Evans, who is on the Council of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and who leads this competition initiative, commented:

“Effective communication is vital for patient safety. Studies have shown that whilst surgeons tend to be generally thorough in providing details about surgical conditions and treatments, they often don’t explore patients’ emotional concerns or express empathy in as much depth as they could. Equally, the pressures of the current shift system place a lot of emphasis on handover clarity, and it was fantastic to see through this competition how the next generation of surgeons propose communication solutions and techniques in a creative way, even through the simple use of a smartphone video.

“Last year’s winning team submitted an excellent video depicting the use of SBAR in an original way – it put out a powerful message and a reminder that this effective tool can help cut errors and ensure the healthcare team covers all the salient and necessary features when providing patient history.”
