Touch Surgery

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has teamed up with Touch Surgery, the mobile cognitive simulation and rehearsal app, to deliver better training and improve global surgical practice through Touch Surgery’s library of surgical simulations.

Touch Surgery is officially the largest community of surgeons practising and rehearsing virtual surgery, and is accessible via any smart device on both iOS and Android platforms. Touch Surgery allows surgeons to learn and rehearse procedures with the ability to evaluate cognitive competence through a validated, objective scoring system. The aim of the platform is to better disseminate best surgical practice and to use objective data to validate surgical knowledge.

Established in 1505, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) is one of the oldest and largest surgical corporations in the world, dedicated to the pursuit of excellence and advancement in surgical practice through its interest in education, training, and examinations, through its liaison with external medical bodies, and by representing the modern surgical workforce. Today, the RCSEd is a modern network of approximately 22,500 surgical and dental professionals in over 100 countries worldwide.  The College is also home to the UK’s only Faculty of Surgical Trainers, open to all those with an interest in surgical training, regardless of College affiliation.  Although the College was founded and is based in Edinburgh, in early 2014 the College opened a new centre in Birmingham to cater to the 80% of its UK membership who are based in England and Wales (11,000 professionals in total).

Commenting on the College’s endorsement of the Touch Surgery App, RCSEd Convenor of Education Professor Gerry McGarry said:

Gerry McGarry"As one of the oldest surgical organisations in world, RCSEd is strongly committed to advancing surgical training and education and is continuously striving to explore new and improved approaches to enhance our membership’s learning, training and career development.

"We have found the Touch Surgery app to be an innovative learning tool that we believe can help surgeons at all levels of their careers. The app provides an exciting platform for surgeons to share their experiences of challenging operations and to rehearse and learn new techniques. We look forward to providing surgical educational material in collaboration with Touch Surgery for the benefit of the surgical community. We have no hesitation in recommending this app to our Fellows and Members.”
