The College is delighted to announce that from December 2015, the UK Diploma in Mountain Medicine will be organised and awarded by the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care (FPHC).
The successful Mountain Medicine Programme has been run for the past ten years by Medical Expeditions and accredited by the University of Leicester, the UIAA (Union Internationale Des Associations D’Alpinisme)/IKAR (International Commission of Alpine Rescue) and ISMM (International Society of Mountain Medicine).
The Programme is a combination of practical skills and theory. Candidates can study for either a Certificate in Mountain Medicine or a Diploma in Mountain Medicine from the RCSEd with the option to staircase between the two qualifications. Upon successful completion candidates also receive a Diploma from the UIAA/IKAR/ISMM.
The Diploma of Mountain Medicine is aimed at healthcare professionals interested in expedition, travel, remote, rescue and high altitude medicine. It consists of four residential weeks, question papers and written submissions. The faculty include some of the most eminent figures in high altitude medicine, top mountain guides and those at the forefront of mountain rescue.
The Faculty of Pre-Hospital Care Chairman, Colville Laird commented:
"The Faculty are delighted to have been approached to take over the highly respected Mountain Medicine Programme. This will complement the Faculty’s existing suite of Diplomas by examination. We very much look forward to working with the current providers to ensure the smooth transition of the programme and to working alongside our new Mountain Medicine Faculty colleagues”.
The programme will launch in December 2015. Details about the programme will be available from the Faculty at the end of July. Candidates interested in receiving this information when it becomes available can note their interest now to be added to the mailing list. Notes of interest should be emailed to: email@example.com.
