Responding to the news that a £780m deal to privatise NHS services will include surgical procedures in mobile operating theatres, The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) said it was extremely surprised that the contracts had been awarded without proper consultation. The College expressed grave concerns about some of the companies that had been awarded contracts, such as the example of the wholly privatised service at Hinchingbrooke that had failed publicly.

The RCSEd says this is a serious patient safety issue and is calling for proper consultation to take place, and assurances that all companies involved in the process are subject to strict accreditation and governance.
