The 2015 ACCEA National Awards process is now closed. Results should be announced early 2016. More details are available on the ECCEA webpage.

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is pleased to have been able to support those Fellows who have sought recognition through the 2015 National Clinical Excellence Awards Scheme in England and Wales. We note that results will be announced around the turn of the year.

The process will be extremely competitive with some 2000 new and renewal applications submitted to ACCEA. The increase from 1539 in the 2014 round has arisen because of a number of consultants whose award was not deemed strong enough to be renewed for 5 years but was extended only for 12 months. In the 2015 round, the number of awards are likely to remain unchanged, so many more consultants will be disappointed with the outcome.

For those receiving new awards, these will be backdated to 1 April 2015 with renewals being made from 1 April 2016. Those colleagues whose renewal is unsuccessful will have the award cease on 31 March 2016. Consultants with an unsuccessful silver-platinum award, will be considered for renewal at a lower national level if their score is deemed sufficiently competitive. If their score does not justify it, consultants will have their award cease on 31 March 2016 in the same way as other unsuccessful renewal applicants.

For the first time, ACCEA has elected to publish the full application for both successful new and successful renewal applicants. The increasing transparency of the Awards process is welcomed but, RCSEd remains concerned that the efforts of consultant surgeons in delivering excellence and improvements in patient care may go unrecognised.
