The Intercollegiate Advisory Committee for Sedation in Dentistry has published the first Standards for Conscious Sedation in the Provision of Dental Care. The Committee comprises the dental faculties of the royal colleges of surgeons and the Royal College of Anaesthetists.
Professor Richard Ibbetson, Chair of the Committee and former Dean of the Faculty of Dental Surgery of the RCSEd, commented: “The report defines the standards for the provision of conscious sedation in the delivery of dental care. It is strongly patient focussed whilst clinical provision is underpinned by the requirement for high standards of education and training for the entire clinical team.”
Conscious sedation is an important modality that forms one strand of the delivery of dental care to patients who have significant anxiety. This document describes the clinical techniques that are available for conscious sedation in dentistry and the appropriate environments for their delivery.
