In anticipation of this Friday’s Committee Stage for the Medical Innovation Bill, Mr Ian Ritchie, President of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh said:

“As one of the UK’s largest medical Royal Colleges, we remained unconvinced of the need for this Bill. Indeed we share Sir Robert Francis QC’s view that it is potentially ‘dangerous for patients because it proposes safeguards which are illusory.’

I have written to a number of Lords expressing our concerns and asking them to consider the validity of the Bill. However should they be mindful to support the Bill, I have also asked them to endorse the amendments made by Lords Turnberg and Winston and Baroness Finlay that provide a number of important safeguards.”
