The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh have today offered support to NHS England after a patient safety alert was issued as part of their ongoing work to improve the social care patients receive as they are discharged from hospital.

RCSEd President Ian Ritchie said:

"We have been working for over 500 years to uphold surgical standards to ensure that patient safety is assured. It is vital that patients receive the highest standards of care during a handover or discharge and surgeons must take lead in identifying and eradicating any problems encountered. This is why I will be calling on our 11,000  members in England to provide NHS England with examples of successful local initiatives, as well as their views on how processes can be improved.”
