SN JuneThe latest issue of Surgeons' News is out now and weighs up professional values in the wake of the Francis Report.

In a special feature, our contributors address the wider issues around the Mid Staffordshire Hospital scandal, such as ethics, whistleblowing and patient safety.

Writing in this edition, Editor John Duncan said: "The service faces an ageing population with multiple co-morbidities, ever increasing complexity of care, a focus on outcomes and the specialism versus generalism debate, all in the context of decreasing resources. In this environment, it is even more important to focus on the core values of healthcare. Compassion, quality, honesty and integrity must remain at the heart of everything that we do."

The summer issue also covers ethics and the law for surgical trainees, in a course review by the Association of Surgeons in Training. Other features include a review of the President's Meeting in March, delivering healthcare to rural communities in sub-Saharan Africa, and the College's bid to upgrade its Museum.
