Dr Pillarisetti receives Overseas Medal from RCSEd President, Mr Ian Ritchie

An Indian breast surgeon has become the youngest recipient of a prestigious Overseas Medal from the oldest surgical college in the world, The Royal College of Surgeons Edinburgh (RCSEd), where he received the honour at an awards ceremony held at the 500-year-old Edinburgh College on Friday 5 July 2013.

Dr Raghu Ram Pillarisetti, Consultant Oncoplastic Breast Surgeon and CEO & Director of Ushalakshmi Breast Cancer Foundation has been awarded this accolade in recognition of the unwavering contribution he has made for over a decade in improving the standards of surgical education in the Indian subcontinent.

A citation was read out at the ceremony outlining the outstanding achievements of Dr Pillarisetti, which included detailing the distinction he achieved by organising the highest number of overseas final MRCS courses ever held by RCSEd in an overseas location (Hyderabad). The citation also praised the key role he has played in in organising three intercollegiate overseas MRCS examinations in Andhra Pradesh for the first time in the College's history (these were held in 2008, 2010 and 2012).

Over the past ten years, well over 1,500 surgeons from the Indian subcontinent have attended the overseas courses organised by Dr Pillarisetti on behalf of the RCSEd in Hyderabad, most of whom have passed the MRCS examinations in India without the need to travel to the UK to sit the exam.

Speaking on this happy occasion, Dr Raghu Ram said that it has been the most humbling moment for him to receive this most prestigious Award from the Royal College and to be the youngest recipient of the Overseas gold medal in the 508 years history of the oldest surgical college in the world.
