The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has named Riders for Health as its adopted charity for 2013.
The 20-year-old social enterprise works in sub-Saharan Africa, providing transport to connect rural communities with healthcare providers. From Nigeria to Lesotho, Riders for Health's fleet of vehicles facilitates emergency referrals, transports samples and supplies, and mobilises community health workers.
RCSEd President, Mr Ian Ritchie said: "The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is delighted to support Riders for Health as our charity for 2013.
"Over the coming year, our Office Bearers, Council members and staff will take part in an exciting programme of events to raise as much as possible for Riders for Health.
"For rural populations in sub-Saharan Africa, Riders for Health provide a vital link to healthcare services and help acutely ill patients who, too often, are forced to take long bus journeys to hospital.
"We look forward to an exciting year of fundraising in aid of this very worthy cause."
