The Faculty of Dental Surgery of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh welcomes the publication in England of 'Securing Excellence in Commissioning NHS Dental Services'.

The Dean of the Dental Faculty, Professor Richard Ibbetson, said today:

"This is document is of crucial importance both to the patients whom we serve and to our major constituency of dental Fellows and Members who live and work in England.

"It describes an entirely new model for commissioning dental services in primary and secondary care. The Dental Faculty is strongly supportive of any structures and processes which will deliver high quality oral healthcare and believes it essential that the commissioning of such services is linked to local dental needs and patient outcomes. These are things that this Faculty has argued for over many years.

"The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Faculty of Dental Surgery is the only faculty that supports the activities of the entire dental team through dedicated advisory boards - specialists, general practitioners and dental care professionals.

"We hope that these new arrangements will enhance the quality and range of dentistry available for patients and will improve their access to high quality services both in both the primary and secondary care settings. We believe in developing the full potential of all dental team members and indeed this is essential if high standards are to be achieved and outcomes improved and we will continue to play a leading role."
