Today's publication of the Francis Report marks a watershed moment across all areas of healthcare.  Now is the time for all of us who are involved in healthcare to acknowledge the multiple failings outlined in the publication and to work with our colleagues to safeguard patients' experience in the future.

This is a substantial report which deals with very sensitive issues and therefore one which deserves our closest attention.  Excellence in the practice of surgery, together with patient safety and well-being, are at the very core of our College's activities and we shall be studying carefully those aspects of the Report to identify how we can support clinicians and the wider NHS going forward.

The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has today released a statement relating to the Francis Report, of which we are wholly supportive. The College will continue to play an active role in the Academy's ongoing discussions and activities relating to the Report and the recommendations laid out within it.
