Portsmouth Dental Surgeon receives RCSEd Faculty of Dental Surgery Medal

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) recognised the achievements of a Portsmouth dental surgeon at a diploma ceremony held at the 500-year-old Edinburgh College on Friday 12 October 2012.
Consultant Orthodontist, Mr David Birnie, was awarded the RCSEd Faculty of Dental Surgery Medal in recognition of the contribution he has made to dentistry, as well as the long and significant work he has undertaken for the RCSEd Dental Faculty, in particular in the field of medical informatics.
Explaining more about Mr Birnie's nomination to receive the Dental Surgery Medal, Dean of the RCSEd Dental Faculty, Professor Richard Ibbetson said:
"Mr Birnie is an orthodontist with both a national and international reputation. His support, enthusiasm and commitment have been unstinting and extend far beyond that of the typical Dental Fellow and we have been very fortunate to work with a Fellow who has contributed so much.
"He has been viewed as a leading figure on medical informatics worldwide and has many achievements in promoting elearning as a major educational tool for our dental and surgical membership. In addition, he served as a Member of Dental Council for several years, established the first Advisory Board for Professions Complementary to Dentistry and was chair of Specialist Advisory Board in Orthodontics for a number of years. I am delighted to have welcomed Mr Birnie to receive the RCSEd Dental Surgery Medal of the College."
Commenting on receiving the RCSEd Dental Surgery Medal from the College, Mr Birnie said:
"The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh has played a very important role in my professional development, education and fellowship. I thank the College most profoundly for honouring me with the award of Faculty of Dental Surgery medal."
