One of the 2012 recipients of a King James IV Professorship is to give his oration at the 4th World Congress of the International Academy of Oral Oncology, being held from 15-18 May 2013, in Rhodes, Greece.
Professor Lakshman Samaranayake is the Dean and, Chair of Oral Microbiology at the Faculty of Dentistry, and Tam Wah-Ching Professor of Dental Sciences at the University of Hong Kong, as well as the Director of the Prince Philip Dental Hospital. The author of over 400 research/review articles, Professor Samaranayake has written more than 30 book chapters and eight books; some translated into five languages.
He recently received the IADR Distinguished Scientist Award in Oral Medicine and Pathology, and the King James IV Professorship from The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, UK. The King James IV lectureships are awarded by the College annually in open competition to practitioners of surgery or dental surgery who have made a significant contribution to the clinical and/or scientific basis of surgery. King James IV of Scotland, who confirmed the RCSEd Seal of Cause on the 13th October 1506, had an interest in all matters scientific, including medicine and surgery, and was particularly proud of his skill as a dental surgeon.
Professor Samaranayake's address will focus on 'Oral Candida in Health and Disease'. In his abstract outlining the presentation, Professor Samatanayake explains:
"My presentation describes how I attempted, over a period of three decades, to unveil the pathogenic mechanisms of an enemy that `sleeps with us` ordinarily, yet strikes with a vengeance given the opportunity. In brief, the data presented is a thumb sketch of various novel discoveries on the clinical epidemiology, aetiopathogenesis, and clinical management of oral candidal infections."
