The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has welcomed the National Confidential Enquiry report into Patient Outcome and Death, 'Time to Intervene?', which has been issued 1 June 2012.

This critical analysis of patients undergoing cardiopulmonary resuscitation, as a result of an in-hospital cardiorespiratory arrest, highlights a number of key learning points that should be addressed. These include: the importance of early warning systems in assisting with the timely recognition of deterioration in patients; the need for early review of deteriorating patients by Consultants; the need for high quality documentation for all aspects of care and for the documentation of CPR decisions especially, to be made in good time and the need for continued emphasis on opportunities for organ donation.
