The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh is calling for applicants to take part in its next available Basic Surgical Skills Course being held at 500-year-old Edinburgh College on 26 and 27 July 2012.
The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh runs eight Basic Surgical Skills courses per year in the Surgical Skills Laboratory of the College. Aimed at Foundation Year 2 (FY2) and Specialist Trainees (ST1 & ST2) interested in pursuing a career in surgery, this course is designed to introduce core surgical skills at the very start of a surgeon's training by teaching correct basic technique, which may not specifically have been covered during their foundation or core training placements.
The Basic Surgical Skills courses have been running since 1994, with the involvement of all four UK and Ireland Colleges of Surgeons, and are designed to teach the essential basic technical skills required of a surgeon, instilling good practice at the early stages of training. Participants are introduced to the principles underpinning the various techniques being taught and practice these techniques with individual tuition and under the expert supervision of consultant surgeons.
A pre-course DVD is sent to participants giving them the opportunity to view the basic concepts covered by the course. The course is held over two days with a series of demonstrations and extensive hands on sessions. Techniques are practiced using a combination of prepared animal tissue, synthetic models and simulation.
On completion of this two day course, participants should be able to demonstrate a wide range of surgical disciplines, from handling instruments and to undertaking course biopsy, wound management and drainage techniques.
Participants are assessed throughout the course and issued with a certificate upon successful completion. If you are interested in reading more about this course or booking a place online, please visit the Basic Surgical Skills Course information page or email Claire Forrest at C.Forrest@rcsed.ac.uk.
