The Academy of Medical Royal Colleges has today (4 December 2012) released a report, 'Seven Day Consultant Present Care', which recommends that patients in hospital should be reviewed by a consultant at least once every 24 hours, including weekends and bank holidays, unless there are good reasons for them to not to have a daily review.

Commenting on this, RCSEd President, Mr Ian Ritchie said:

"Delivering the highest standard of care is at the heart of what the RCSEd does. Our College strongly supports the principle laid out in this report that high-quality care for patients must be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

"The implications of providing this have far-reaching consequences for the way that clinicians will work in future; we are fully committed to supporting our membership and the wider NHS as they make the changes that lie ahead, all of which will ensure that patient welfare is kept at the centre of everything we do. "
