FRRHH Unveils New Logo

As one of the oldest surgical Colleges in the world, the founding of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) in 1505 is hugely significant in the history of surgical developments. In present day, the College has grown to serve almost 30,000 Affiliates, Members, and Fellows across the globe with 40% of membership based overseas. Launched in August 2020, the new RCSEd brand identity was created to reflect this history, reach and growth and echoes them down to all faculties (including FRRHH) that sit alongside the main College.

In developing the new logo for the College and subsequent faculties, it was important to show the pride of our origins in Edinburgh but also dedication to our friends and members across the globe.

The College Sigillum - which will continue to be an important part of the College fabric - provided symbolic elements from the crest that were incorporated into the new logo.

  • The ‘sun’ which depicts clarity over ignorance;
  • The ‘castle’ which signifies physical roots in Edinburgh – a city known for innovation and education in medicine and surgery;
  • The year of foundation ‘1505’ which marks the date of receiving Royal charter.


Presenting itself as a symbol that would bind these elements, the Unicorn was an obvious choice as the favourite heraldic animal of James IV, the king who gave the College its Royal Charter in 1505. The Unicorn is also a heraldic symbol of Scotland and is known as the ‘Horse of Healing’. It is seen as a force for good in both Western and Eastern mythology with aspirational qualities including purity, boldness, pride, joy, intelligence, hope, and positivity. Such qualities overarch not just the College activities but the values and mission of each of the faculties that sit alongside The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. 

Formally launched in November 2018, The Faculty of Remote and Rural Healthcare incorporated Humanitarian in its structure in August 2020 thus becoming The Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare (FRRHH). The faculty was established in response to the need identified within both industry and the public health arena to define, review and set standards of competence for organisations as well as medical and non-medical personnel delivering healthcare in remote and rural environments. 

With a primary objective to “improve the health outcomes of individuals living and working in remote, rural, austere and life-threatening areas of the world”, the strong identity created through the new College logo allows the faculty to act on and deliver activities to reflect this overarching vision. 

On collaboration with the branding project, FRRHH Faculty Development Manager, Gill Mitchell was keen that the vision for FRRHH shone through when assigning the faculty specific colour identity to the FRRHH specific logo. Gill knew it was vital for the logo entirety to reflect the aim to ‘establish, promote and develop a diverse global community of healthcare professionals operating across various sectors, diverse industries and challenging settings.’ The values taken from the main college logo tied with the representation from the faculty specific colour ‘red’ in its signification of courage, action, survival and passion will incorporate and demonstrate FRRHH fittingly. The new logo will support the faculty activities as it develops leadership, innovation, standard setting in education and training in the fast-developing field of remote, rural and humanitarian healthcare. 


Chair of The Faculty of Remote, Rural & Humanitarian Healthcare, Dr Rikard Moen shared in the exciting development of the visual identity of FRRHH commenting that: 

'the Faculty are delighted to unveil this new logo, created to strengthen our mission statement of improving the health outcomes of individuals living and working in remote, rural, austere and life threatening areas of the world. It represents the extensive settings we reach and knowledgeable individuals we have integral to the development of this Faculty.'

Press Release: Royal College Announces New Development to Support Humanitarian Healthcare Professionals

A leading surgical College has announced an update to its Faculty of Remote and Rural Healthcare (FRRH) as part of its ongoing partnership with UK-Med to provide support to individuals and organisations working in humanitarian healthcare.

 The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh (RCSEd) has created the expanded Faculty of Remote, Rural and Humanitarian Healthcare (FRRHH), which will support a global network of healthcare professionals working in this fast-developing field.    

Including humanitarian healthcare within the existing FRRH structure is expected to strengthen the Faculty’s efforts to become a global network for professionals working in clinical and non-clinical environments where skills and experience beyond urban healthcare systems are often required. 

The newly integrated Faculty will support the needs of individuals and organisations working across the public, private and third sectors, by setting professional and educational standards, developing leadership capacity, accrediting training and supporting innovation in the field. In addition to our remote and rural healthcare practitioners, the Faculty will act as a professional home for humanitarian healthcare workers and will ensure that those with ambitions to work in the field are supported to move between domestic practice and overseas work.  

Two world-leading humanitarian experts have been appointed to the Faculty’s Executive Committee to help shape its strategic focus and drive forward its efforts to support healthcare professionals in the sector. 

Founder of UK medical aid charity UK-Med, Professor Tony Redmond OBE, has been appointed to the Executive Committee, bringing over thirty years’ experience of international emergency humanitarian aid. 

Professor Redmond has organised medical support in response to some of the world’s most challenging humanitarian disasters, including earthquakes in Haiti and Iran, the UN air crash in Kosovo, conflicts in Bosnia, Kosovo, Sierra Leone, Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines and establishing tented hospitals for Kurdish refugees on the Iran-Iraq border. 

Mr Andy Kent, consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness, has been appointed as Faculty Deputy Chair.  Andy has a military background and has most recently travelled to Beirut with a medical needs assessment team to make recommendations for the UK’s health response  in Lebanon’s crisis struck capital.  He is also the current surgical lead for UK-Med and a medical advisor to the Halo Trust. 

Professor Michael Griffin OBE, President of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, said: “It is with enormous pleasure that we welcome this newly integrated Faculty.  It has long been recognised that the needs and challenges of delivering healthcare in a remote and rural setting overlap with and mirror those of the humanitarian environment.

“The expansion of this Faculty is a fantastic move for the College, and I believe it will be extremely beneficial to people and organisations in these fields.

“I’m very proud of everyone who has contributed to the development of this Faculty so far and I am delighted to welcome Anthony and Andy to the Executive Committee. I know their expertise and experience will be invaluable in shaping the Faculty’s strategy and I look forward to seeing what lies ahead.” 

This important development marks a key milestone in the collaborative efforts of the RCSEd and UK-Med to establish a professional home for humanitarian healthcare professionals. This effort has been supported to date by funding from UK aid from the Department for International Development (DfID).

An academic institutions response to COVID-19: Robert Gordon University

With rapidly changing developments relating to Covid-19 the FRRH has reached out to our members in an effort to share experiences and best practices. We hope that this will support and guide healthcare professionals and academic educators during these difficult times.

We have been in contact with The Faculty of Remote and Rural Healthcare Organisational Member, the School of Nursing and Midwifery at Robert Gordon University. Ian Murray, Professor and Head of School of Nursing and Midwifery, shares the schools experience responding to the challenges created by the COVID-19 Pandemic.

How has the COVID-19 outbreak affected the delivery the delivery of academic education at Robert Gordon University (RGU)?

"From an academic provider perspective we’ve had to shift all face to face learning and assessment to online formats. Course structures have changed to accommodate final year students and some second-year students taking up paid placements within the NHS. This has all been done in close collaboration with the professional regulators, NES and Scottish Government."

What measures are you and your organisation taking to increase standards in care and hygiene?

"The University is playing a key role in supporting the NHS to address the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Academic staff have been involved in up-skilling returners to the NHS and other healthcare professionals such as podiatrists and dental nurses to step into key supportive roles within the NHS. This has involved training in infection control and protection, the use of personal protective equipment as well as some fundamental caring skills such as washing, assisting with eating, mobilisation and the recording of vital signs.

Some academic staff will be stepping into roles with the NHS and others have been involved in supporting the care home sector. The university has doubled its support for students in practice. Since the 13th of April over 600 RGU student nurses, midwives, student AHPs and social work students have begun their preparation to undertake paid placements in the health, social care and care home sector."

How is the academic staff adapting during the COVID-19 pandemic and what are the main priorities established during these difficult times?

 "Academic staff at RGU are using a range of online tools to stay engaged with normal business as much as is achievable at this time. Student support is happening through a range of online tools and CampusMoodle, the university’s virtual learning environment. The main focus of the university is to ensure as many students as possible can either graduate or progress as per their academic programmes. Therefore, academic staff have developed creative assessment techniques to ensure all learning outcomes are assessed within the approved programmes. In addition, many schools and departments are working closely with health and social care providers in support of the effort to address the COVID-19 challenge."

Remote and rural best practice helps fight against COVID-19 

The COVID-19 pandemic presents an unprecedented challenge to health care professionals all over the world. Recent developments have seen every member of the health care profession adapt and evolve to tackle the spread of this virus to save patients whilst facing increasingly difficult situations every day.

RCSEd in its commitment to making it better for all, is in regular communication with our Faculties to spotlight and share best practice that will support, guide and inspire the healthcare profession during these challenging times.

We caught up with Professor Angus Watson, RCSEd Lead Member of the Faculty of Remote and Rural Healthcare (FRRH) Executive Committee, on how Remote and Rural Healthcare teams long established practices can be propagated to other areas of the healthcare system and on new adaptations in tackling COVID-19.

How has the COVID-19 outbreak affected your practice and patient treatments?

"Delivering care for a geographically dispersed population, we have already adopted many novel ways of delivering care. The pandemic has created the environment for other colleagues to adopt these innovations: phone clinics, video consultations and the use of patient portals. Virtual consultations have a high patient satisfaction rate and save many carbon miles. Self-isolation has ‘forced’ healthcare colleagues and patients to try these ways of consultation and to a degree, have realised that any of their perceived risks about these non-standard tools, are probably less of a problem in reality."

What measures are your practice taking to increase standards in care and hygiene?

"We have trained to use PPE and have simulated operating in a COVID-19 theatre. We have introduced questionnaire and chest radiograph checks on the day that elective patients are being admitted to hospital. We have cohorted elective operating into a temporary theatre away from the main theatre complex." 

How is the team adapting during the COVID-19 pandemic and what are the main priorities established during these difficult times?

"The different ‘tribes’ of medical specialties have come together to work differently. We have surgical trainees working within medicine and surgical consultants being trained on how to deliver intensive care. This fluidity will, I believe, reap dividends for health care systems once the pandemic is over. I hope a more thoughtful and caring workforce will emerge which will ultimately benefit patient care."
