Tackling Undermining & Bullying in the NHS

Birmingham, 8 February 2018

Further to the launch of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh’s (RCSEd) #LetsRemoveIt campaign against bullying and undermining behaviour, RCSEd and Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) are pleased to invite leading health professionals and organisations to attend a one-day event focused on developing practical solutions to this problem.

It is estimated that bullying and undermining costs organisations in the UK £13.75m annually and healthcare professionals have attributed disruptive behaviour in the perioperative area alone to 67% of adverse events, 71% of medical errors and 27% of perioperative deaths.

Given the Colleges’ duty to protect patients, RCSEd and RCOG are committed to changing this culture. This event will bring together health professionals to discuss and develop a series of practical next steps.

Commenting on this forthcoming event, Urology Surgical Trainee and Chair of the RCSEd Anti-bullying Campaign Group Miss Alice Hartley said:

“Whilst bullying and undermining are unacceptable behaviours in themselves, they also clearly have a detrimental effect on patient outcomes. Although it is widely perceived as being a problem primarily affecting trainees, instances of bullying occur at all levels of the NHS workforce with consultants, trainees, nurses and allied health professionals all reporting the impact it has on their wellbeing and ability to deliver the best possible patient care.

“We are already using our education and training activities to identify and challenge such behaviours so that they become unacceptable by default, but we welcome and encourage medical professionals and organisations to join us to participate in this crucial event to share tactics and develop further interventions to properly address this problem.”
