Preparing for the MAGDS Examination (Online)
This short interactive course is designed to inform and prepare candidates who are considering taking the Membership in Advanced General Dental Surgery (MAGDS) examination. The course will run from 4pm on Friday 9 until 4pm on Saturday 10 October 2020.
This examination is set at the clinical level for Tier 2 treatments and confers a prestigious Membership of the Royal College of Surgeons award.
It is designed for Dentists with more than 5 years post BDS experience and General Dental Practitioners who wish for a Royal College accreditation for their advanced skills and judgement.
The course runs over one evening and one full day.
Those preparing to sit for the Membership in Advanced General Dental Surgery (MAGDS) 1-3 March 2021 and 6-8 September 2021 Diet. Dentists with more than 5 years post BDS experience.
The course will be delivered entirely online with a series of seminars on the purpose and individual components of the examination, together with direct experience of simulated Structured Oral Examinations.
As a result of the course being online, there are certain requirements that delegates require to make the most of their experience:
- A quiet, uninterrupted room or area to work in.
- All delegates must have a MAC / PC with admin access to install Zoom.
- They must ensure that they have a strong broadband/internet connection to allow for video conversation. Plus, a Webcam.
- A microphone headset is recommended but not mandatory
For the simulated Structured Oral Examinations, delegates will have the opportunity to undertake at least one Diagnosis and Treatment Planning case and one Clinical Problem Solving case as candidates. They will also role play being an examiner and an observer in the examination and share feedback with their peers.
- To provide an insight into the purpose and format of each examination component
- To provide prospective candidates with guidance on how to manage their time, focus and performance during the examination process.
- To provide prospective candidates with direct experience, via a mock examination scenario, of each of the structured oral components.
- Have the opportunity to discuss the above with experienced examiners and candidates who have successfully passed the examination.
On completion of this course the participants will have improved in their ability to:
- Tackle sample written questions
- Use the diagnosis and treatment planning tool
- Respond to the types of questions that will be asked on Diagnosis and Treatment Planning and Clinical Problem Solving in structured Oral Examination
- Describe their strengths and weaknesses in their performance.
- The types of questions that are used in the written examination and their purpose.
- How to manage their time to maximise their performance.
- How to read and assimilate clinical information given as part of the scenario upon which the questions are based.
- How to correctly read and understand written questions.
- How to structure their written answers
- The essential elements of diagnostic and treatment-planning
- The importance of holistic treatment planning.
- The importance of accurate and comprehensive diagnosis to successful treatment planning and scheduling
- The pitfalls in diagnosis, leading to inappropriate or incomplete treatment planning.
- A simple tool to ensure that all findings and diagnoses are present in their treatment plans.
Structured Oral Examinations:
- The structure and conduct of the examination process.
- The strategies for assimilating the clinical information provided in the examination.
- How to structure your notes for easy retrieval of information.
- A range of styles of questions that may be asked.
- Strategies for structuring answers to questions.
