Training in the UK - IMGSS

A Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh International Medical Graduate Sponsorship Scheme (IMGSS) is open to suitably qualified international medical graduates to come to the UK for a limited period of training in a surgical specialty.

The scheme offers sponsorship to doctors for the purposes of registration with the General Medical Council (GMC) without taking the PLAB test and for sponsorship under the Department of Health's Medical Training Initiative Scheme (MTI).

The Clinical Lead for the scheme is Mr Euan Munro, Consultant Vascular Surgeon and Regional Surgical Adviser.

Testimonial from Russells Hall Hospital on the IMGSS

"Russells Hall Hospital has had a long and very profitable dual sponsorship scheme with the Post Graduate Institute of Medicine In Sri Lanka (PGIM). We have sponsored trainees from the PGIM for more than 15 years with the help of The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's IMGSS.

The PGIM is unique in that it would fund trainees for a period of up to 12 months  to allow them to complete the mandatory overseas experience at the very end of their surgical training programme. They are also allowed a maximum of 24 months of leave from the Government health service in Sri Lanka which ties in nicely with the maximum period allowed by the IMGSS.

These trainees are valued by our Trust as they have very advanced surgical skills and add great value to our department's skill mix. In return the trainees gain an extremely valuable insight into modern surgical practise whilst enhancing their communication skills including multidisciplinary team working, interpersonal relationships and evidence based practise of surgery. It is pleasing to note that without exception all the PGIM trainees have completed the UK fellowship exams during their time at Russells Hall.

Upon completion of their UK training they are ready to return home to placements in the Sri Lankan government health sector as consultant surgeons."
