RCSEd publishes Research Report

27-Nov-2012

Research ReportThe Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's commitment to the advancement of surgical knowledge and patient care has taken a further step with the release this month of the College's sixth Research Report.

The Report is the most extensive yet of the RCSEd's biennial publications and brings together findings of clinical research supported by the RCSEd.

The outstanding level of applications received by the College is evident in the range and high quality of work in the Report.

Chairman of the College's Research Allocation Committee, Professor Kenneth Fearon said:

"It is particularly important that research is focused on unmet clinical need and that there is a clear route whereby basic research can be readily translated to the bedside. Due to its craft-based nature, surgery and thereby surgical research has mostly had a strong clinical component or at least an element that is easily translated into the clinical environment. The Research Strategy Committee and Research Allocation Committee continue to support this view."

Writing in his Foreword to the Report, Immediate Past President Mr David Tolley commented: "Despite the continuing difficult economic climate, we have maintained and expanded the research activities supported by this College and we are continuing to attract a high number of quality applications for the awards and bursaries we provide.

"The College's Research Strategy Committee has contributed to our on-going success in this area, through providing strategic direction to these activities and assisting in identifying new opportunities. I am also grateful to the Research Allocation Committee for their continuing expert assessment of the applications we receive. It is this thorough assessment which ensures that the research projects supported are of a consistently high quality, innovative and relevant."

Over the past decade, the College Grants system has seen 43 report papers published, the award of 14 higher degrees and 21 grants used as the basis for further funding. In addition, College Fellowships have made 10 awards, with seven report papers published and six higher degrees awarded. Thirteen Cutner Travelling Fellowships have also been awarded, with recipients enjoying clinical teaching and research experience in a range of countries.

The College also endeavours to assist the future membership, with 22 Student Bursaries awarded to medical students across the UK in the last 10 years.
