PRESS RELEASE
Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and Therapists largest ever World Congress in the UK
The UK is hosting the World Congress of Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and Therapists in Edinburgh from 5th to 8th September 2010. More than 1400 attendees – the largest number ever - have registered for the Congress which is held every 3 years around the world. The Congress will be debating the best treatments for shoulder and elbow disorders with a large focus on the rapidly expanding keyhole surgery operations which are now allowing middle aged and elderly patients to return to normal activities which, in the past, they would have been unable to do. A number of keyhole operations are also helping our sportsmen and women to return to top performance – both able bodied and disabled.
The keynote lectures will be given by Dr Stephen Burkhart from San Antonio, Texas who will lecture on the advances in keyhole surgery of the shoulder and Professor Herbert Resch from Salzburg, Austria who will present on the best surgical treatments for fractures of the shoulder.
The Congress is to be chaired by some of the leading shoulder and elbow surgeons in the UK - Professor W Angus Wallace, Professor of Orthopaedic and Accident Surgery from Nottingham University, Mr Stephen Copeland, Director of the Reading Shoulder Unit and Professor Roger Emery from Imperial College, London.
In addition to the lectures there will be over 300 original free papers from around the world. There will be a number of practical workshops which will provide up-to-date training on the newest surgical techniques from different countries which are now used for both open and keyhole surgery.
Surgery is very dependent on good post-operative physiotherapy after surgery and 140 Therapists are attending the Congress and running their own parallel meeting which is being led by top Shoulder Physiotherapists Martin Scott (Nottingham) and Jo Gibson (Liverpool) with a Keynote Lecture by Dr Jeremy Lewis from London.
