Target Audience SHO, SPR1-2 upwards
Learning Style Mainly practical experiential learning with short seminars, discussion, practical assessment and e-learning.
Aims and Objectives This is a newly-developed, intensive, two-day course focusing on the key skills required for safe laparoscopic surgical practice. The course has been carefully designed and tailored to minimise time spent on didactic teaching and to maximise hands-on experience whilst in the Cuschieri Skills Centre. The course is equally suitable for the junior surgeon starting out in minimal access surgery and for the more senior surgeon who is either new to laparoscopy or wishes to refresh his or her key skills. Innovative on-line learning material provided in advance of the course maximises the time spent in the teaching laboratory. Training will be provided on synthetic and tissue models as well as on state-of-the-art LapSim virtual reality laparoscopic trainers. Expert question-and-answer sessions led by Consultants specialising in laparoscopic surgery will offer participants the opportunity to discuss issues of interest to them in more depth. Day one of the course will take the participant, in a highly structured way, through the key skills of camera and scope manipulation, abdominal access, insufflation, and ergonomics. Practical exercises are provided in sharp and blunt dissection, clip application, electrosurgery, looping, tissue extraction, and port site closure. The second day includes a brief presentation of two edited procedures carried out by Prof Sir Alfred Cuschieri and a number of individual operative procedures that participants carry out in the laboratory. These include diagnostic laparoscopy, laparoscopic appendicectomy, and laparoscopic cholecystectomy. There is also the opportunity to review your knowledge and skills in a brief Objective Structured Clinical Examination (OSCE). Participants will receive a certificate on completion of teh course.
