INFLUENZA A (H1N1) - INFORMATION FOR EXAMINATION CANDIDATES AND COURSE DELEGATES

The effects of the current Swine Flu epidemic may make it necessary to cancel or postpone an examination or educational event. In such a circumstance, the College will make every effort to notify candidates or delegates as soon as the decision to cancel or postpone has been made.

Course fees and examination fees will be reimbursed in full, or carried forward to a rescheduled event, but the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh regrets that it will not incur any further liability.

Target Audience Thoracic Surgeons, Cardiothoracic surgeons and trainees; Pulmunologists and trainees; Oncologists; Allied Practitioners
Learning Style This 2 ½ day course covers the selection, assessment and planning for VATS lung resections. It includes the full range of current techniques and approaches available for: segmental resection, lobectomy and pneumonectomy. Particular importance will be given to pre and interoperative nodal staging, practical tips to facilitate surgery and problem management. Outcome data including long term survival will be reviewed. The programme will also discuss setting up a VATS lobectomy service, training and new developments in minimally invasive lung surgery. Interactive discussion between faculty and delegates is a key feature with the emphasis on sharing experiences and promoting VATS resection. (The course is endorsed by the European Society of Thoracic Surgeons (ESTS)).
Aims and Objectives Topics to be covered: Patient selection and staging; Staging the mediastinum including: EBUS, EUS, Miniprobe, Mediastinoscopy and VAMLA; Resections for metastasis; Subspecialisation; Techniques of VATS anatomical lung resections including: Segmentectomy, Lobectomy and Pneumonectomy; Variations in approaches and technique; Robotics; Tips and technical advice for the various resections; Complications of VATS resections; How to set up a VATS service and team to deliver this; Future directions (single incision, NOTS etc).

We would like to invite you to submit "ABSTRACTS" for this meeting. GUIDELINES FOR SUBMISSION OF ABSTRACTS The College invites consultants and trainees to submit abstracts for poster presentation at this meeting. Abstracts for consideration should be sent electronically to l.judge@rcsed.ac.uk The closing date for receipt of abstracts is 5.00PM ON FRIDAY 6th AUGUST 2010. Further information may be obtained from Mrs Judge at the address listed above or telephone 0131 668 9209. 1.Abstracts submitted should not exceed 200 words. 2.Please ensure that the presenting author is listed first. 3.Abstracts should be structured as follows: A background, which introduces the topic and the problem(s) being addressed, this should be followed by the aim(s)/objective(s). The Patients and methods should be concise and followed by the results; figures and tables will not be accepted. There should be a brief discussion and/or conclusion. 4.The text for all abstract submissions should be in 11pt Arial, left aligned. Authors are asked to refrain from any other formatting eg - indentation. 5.All abbreviations used must be described fully in the text once. Papers that are presented will be published on the College's Website after the event. All correspondence will be emailed unless there is course material to be sent out. Please note an up to date email address is required. PLEASE INFORM US IF THIS CHANGES.
