RCSEd position statement

RCSEd along with other surgical colleges and as part of the Academy of Royal Medical Colleges (AoMRC)has been delegated the statutory duty of implementing a process of specialist recertification. In response to the white paper "Trust Assurance and Safety", the college will construct a proposal for AoMRC concerning the process, its content and the implications including resources.

The RCSED views recertification as an opportunity for surgeons in all subspecialties to reaffirm their professional roles and provide a summative statement on their competencies and competence. The process of competence assurance will be a component part of revalidation and complementary to appraisal and relicensing.

The development of a recertification policy will take in consultation with the fellowship and include best practice in other specialties as well other professions’ and industries with relevant experiences.

RCSEd will also work in concert with specialty associations to ensure appropriate measures are adopted when evaluating specialist performance.
