Ophthalmology Question Bank

The College wishes to maintain high standards and use up to date "state of the art" questions in our ophthalmology examinations. In order to do this we believe that questions should be regularly updated by a wide range of clinicians, both specialists and trainees.

We invite you to write MCQ questions for the new Part 1/Part 2 and the new Final FRCSEd examinations in ophthalmology. We also invite you to write structured viva questions for the new Final FRCSEd examination.

We recommend you use core texts such as the American Academy of Ophthalmology Revision Manuals Series, and other up to date texts on basic sciences, clinical ophthalmology and related clinical areas. The examinations syllabi are on our website, but these are only indicative and additional material may be included so that our exams remain entirely up to date.

All questions should have some clinical relevance - our examinations are designed to improve patient care, not just test memory! Your name will be attached to questions you submit, but will not appear on question papers!

All questions submitted will be scrutinised by a panel of experienced examiners in order to "validate" each question for standard, composition and relevance. Questions that are successful in meeting this validation process, or are modified to meet these criteria, will then be added to the question bank. Your contribution to the bank would be most welcome.

Writing questions is not as difficult as you might think, and can in fact be fun! Detailed instructions and blank templates are provided below.

Questions should be submitted by email to j.mcneill@rcsed.ac.uk.
