Fellowship Examination in Ophthalmology
The College has recently revised all its examinations in Ophthalmology and has developed a new three part examination in the specialty which will be held both here in Edinburgh and overseas.We are now looking to recruit enthusiastic new examiners to complement our existing experienced Faculty of Examiners to help drive this development forward. Applicants should normally be a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh in good standing or have documented affiliation with the College. Please see the attached guidance notes.
Examiners will be expected to contribute to the Question Banks in addition to examining in the oral, clinical and practical components of the examination. All examiners are required undergo training prior to examining and this will be provided by the College.

Appointment to the Faculty of Examiners for Membership and Fellowship Examinations in Ophthalmology
Applicants for the above vacancies are required to fulfil the following entry requirements:
- Fellow (including Fellow ad eundem) of one of the Royal Surgical or Medical Colleges or the Royal College of Ophthalmologists
- Hold or have held full consultant status (not a locum post) for at least 2 years post CCST or equivalent
- Engaged in active clinical/academic practice (clinical practice essential for clinical examination)
- Able to complete one term of office before retirement i.e one full term (6 years including probationary year)
- Active in postgraduate ophthalmic training/education/teaching
- In good standing with the College / Professional Organisation
- In good standing with the GMC / IMC or equivalent body and not under investigation by an NHS Trust / employing body
- Able to provide the names and contact details of two referees
In addition to meeting to eligibility criteria, examiners must show commitment to:
- High professional standards as an examiner, including understanding of appropriate techniques and a policy of courtesy, fairness and non-discrimination towards all candidates
- High professional standards in teaching, including an ability and positive attitude towards teaching
- Competence in and loyalty to the Ophthalmology profession
- Commitment to the examination process, i.e. honouring commitments to write questions and attend examinations, except in exceptional circumstances
- Commitment to ongoing assessment, training and development as an examiner
