Faculty of Dental Surgery

Message from the Dean

Dr DH FelixI am delighted to welcome Professors Paul Brunton, Elizabeth Davenport, Fraser McDonald and Crispian Scully as newly elected Members of Dental Council. In addition Mr. Brent Weller joins Dental Council as the Members' representative. Mr. Peter Durning also joins Dental Council as the newly appointed Convener of the Dental Examinations Committee. I am sure that they will all make a significant contribution to the work of the Faculty.

Dental Specialties

Over the past year there has been much activity for the dental specialties. The work of the GDC's Specialist Dental Education Board continues to move forward with the ongoing development of new curricula for all the dental specialties. The Faculty has been fully engaged in this important (and time consuming) work through its representatives on the Specialist Advisory Committees.

Dental Care Professionals

The Faculty has had a long involvement in a number of initiatives linked to the development of the dental team and continues to support Dental Care Professionals with an Annual Conference. The success of these initiatives is reflected in the capacity attendance at this year's 13th Annual Conference held in March 2009.

Dental Affiliate Scheme

In June the Faculty launched a Dental Affiliate scheme aimed at dental graduates in the first two years following qualification. This provides members with a range of benefits and will hopefully encourage young graduates to engage in the activities of the Faculty. Work is in progress to launch an affiliate scheme for undergraduate students later in the year.

e-Den Project

The Faculty is a full partner in the e-Den project in collaboration with sister Colleges and the Department of Health. This is a web based interactive learning resource which aims to support foundation training for young dental graduates. The first phase will be available online in the autumn of 2009, delivering materials that are useful, engaging and enjoyable.

I am sure the year ahead will bring a number of challenges. However I am confident that, with the support of Fellows and Members, the Faculty will continue to contribute to the development of dental education both in the UK and overseas.

Dr. D. H. Felix
