Patient Safety TV

Patient safety has always been at the foremost of the surgeon's thoughts and actions. The decisions taken prior to and during surgery necessarily involve an evaluation of risk and judgement and action is consequently taken or not as the case may be; and yet little time is spent during surgical training and indeed during surgical practice on analysing these processes. As surgical procedures become more complex and the requirements for care delivery more intense, so does the challenge for the the individual surgeon, clinical team and also the hospital systems become the greater. Given this increasing complexity in care, intermittent error and adverse event is unsurprising. The videos contained in this safety programme include experts from a variety of backgrounds and some of the world leaders in patient safety giving you an account of where these systems and individuals may be vulnerable. The different sections in this programme give a detailed understanding of causality and mitigation in relation to human error in medical practice. It should improve insight and through that, improve practice, making your care of patients safer whilst at the same time giving you a better understanding of your own decision making processes.

The video series was commissioned by the National Patient Safety Agency (NPSA), produced by TVC Films media company and modified for streaming by Aberdeen University Department of Medical Illustration. It is compulsory viewing and hence has been made available to all fellows and members through our secure WebSite
