| The fifth year SSM. The four week block in fifth year is an ideal and unrepeated opportunity to refine your skills in acute medicine. You will have unrivalled exposure to acute illness and injury. Please read the advice to fourth years before coming to the department (it is equally valid for yourselves). The fifth year SSM is assessed as part of your summative portfolio assessment. The assessment will be based on your progress toward the 12 outcomes below. It will also be based on your case report and essay. The medical school asks that you be competent in clinical skills, practical procedures, the ability to investigate a patient and competency in managing common disorders. You should be able to communicate with all groups of patients and provide health advice as required. We expect you to handle information in a confidential manner and be competent to source and evaluate appropriate data. We expect a firm understanding of basic science and how it relates to clinical practice. You should have an understanding of the ethics and legal responsibilities of the role of the doctor and an appreciation of the role of the doctor within the health service. We expect your attendance in the department. Unsatisfactory attendance will be reported to the medical school and will be included in the portfolio assessment. Please contact Mr Paterson in the week prior to your attendance and we will arrange the details of your block. We ask our fifth years to complete a case presentation on an interesting topic seen in the department and we will publish the essay in the A-Z on this web site.
