Faculty of Surgical Trainers

The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Faculty of Surgical Trainers (FST) is open to all those who have an active interest or involvement in surgical training in the UK and internationally, regardless of College affiliation.

The Faculty is the first of its kind in the UK and its purpose is to help support and develop surgeons in their role as surgical trainers. It works to increase the profile and recognition of surgical education and training and to disseminate the message that excellent surgical training means excellent and safer patient care.

It also champions and promotes training in non-technical skills, as well as traditional technical skills, to further enhance patient safety and provide a framework for the training and education of surgical trainers. The Faculty will play an important role as the landscape of Surgical Training changes in the future. As such it was highly active in preparing for the GMC's introduction of trainer approval in 2016.

Membership is available at three levels: Fellow, Member and Associate. Fellows and Members of the Faculty will be awarded the post-nominals FFSTEd and MFSTEd.

Membership of the FST is a College benefit for those RCSEd Fellows, Members and Affiliates who are successful in their application to the Faculty; however an annual subscription rate applies to those who are not Fellows, Members or Affiliates of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh.

Further information about joining is available on the Faculty of Surgical Trainers website.
